I was never particular about
wearing sunscreen or caring about the harmful effects of sun exposure on my
skin. My first serious introduction to the importance of wearing sunscreen was
in 2013 when actor Hugh Jackman revealed he had undergone surgery to remove the cancerous
tumors (basal cell carcinoma) from his nose skin. He took to Twitter to reveal
the news and urged everyone to wear sunscreen and be careful about long-term exposure
to the sun. It came out as a shock as I never thought (in 19 years of my life at
that time) that wolverine could get cancer from just sunlight. I mean it’s just
sunlight, it is supposed to be good and nurturing (all that vitamin D) and
should be making us naturally tan (just like Tan France), but guess I was
wrong.
How
sunlight causes skin damage:
Exposure to sun causes most of
the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging. UVA and UVB rays
from sun accelerate the normal aging process of skin by breaking down the
elastin and collagen of tissues. Premature aging due to sun exposure is called
photoaging.
Photoaging:
In photoaging:
- Skin color changes
- We get Solar lentigo: Tan or brown spots on sun-exposed parts of the body, especially cheeks and backs of hands
- Skin gets Premature wrinkles
- Skin becomes loose and irregular.
- Telangiectasias (Dilation of small blood vessels on skin exposed to sun) happens.
Actinic
keratosis:
Another form of sun damage is
actinic keratosis. This causes rough, sandpaper-like, scaly skin spots that can
later turn into skin cancer.
Skin
cancer:
Skin cancer is the most widespread form of all cancers in America. It is of three types:
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Malignant melanoma
There are approximately two to
three million diagnoses annually for basal cell carcinoma and hundreds of
thousand squamous cell carcinoma diagnosis in the U.S.
How
sunscreen helps:
In a scientific study conducted
for four years, featuring 200 subjects, scientists found that people who used
sunscreen daily was 24% less likely to show increased signs of aging and
wrinkling over time. Sunscreen protects the skin from sunburn, premature aging and
cancer.
FDA
Regulations for Sunscreen:
FDA has clear regulations
mentioned on its website regarding ingredients, labeling, and packaging of
sunscreen. SPF value indicates the level of sunburn protection the sunscreen
offers. A minimum of 15SPF value is mandatory for a sunscreen product.
Sunscreen should be broad-spectrum and expiration date be mentioned on the
label.
Custom
sun protection cream boxes:
There is a comprehensive list
of labeling and packaging requirements that your product must fulfill in order
to be approved by the FDA. If you are a small to medium (Indie Brands) cosmetic company,
you cannot afford to put a lot of time and money for Custom sun protection cream boxes.
Your best shot at getting
cost-effective custom packaging for
sunscreen is outsourcing a reliable packaging company. These companies
